May the Fourth brings forth: A Geek Prayer

A Geek Prayer coverartYears ago, when gathering in the infamous Blue Room student lounge at the Student Union Building at UNB (which is in the building I still work in!), gamers and geeks of all stripes would gather just about every evening and all weekend long to game, gab and generally geek out.

I remember back then hearing people mention “A Geek Prayer”. So many people were raised Catholic or Christian (yet most moved far away from it) that saying “May the Force Be With You” immediately conjured up the response phrase “And also with you.”

Someone mentioned that to me again recently, and I started to elaborate on the idea.. And then I turned the microphone on, and well.. Here we are! 🙂

Oh, and then there’s that *other* voice work.. and that *other* other work.

So, I forgot a few things that are still in production or are in a very early stage in my list of voice work.. I was chatting with my buddy Waldo the other day — a rather smart kid, and I use the term “kid” literally, as he’s in high school — and he reminded me that I’d also provided a voice for him as well, for a project named Of Kings.

He also seems to have convinced me that I would be a good candidate for the position of Production Manager for the new audio group he’s heading, Giant Gnome Productions…

That should be an interesting experience… I still have to get the local audio drama group in order here, but I’m not really keen to do that while the weather is so crappy.. It’s funny, because I don’t mind working in a group which is spread out all over the continent — potentially spanning more than one continent, as I’ve interviewed people in England and Australia — but I have some reservations in managing a local group because the weather prevents my mobility and prevents a face-to-face meeting..

On an unrelated note (because this seems to be a more general blog), I’ve gotten a paper accepted for publication. Its a version of a paper I did for my older work, the one based on my Master’s thesis, rather than my current work (which remains too loose to publish yet). Nonetheless, it will be nice to have a publication again — it’s been a couple of years. I haven’t been focussed on publication, rather trying just to find my research topic more solidly.

And now, to madly get back to work on my research project (not my PhD — that comes tomorrow)..

I’m in a cast! (And no broken limbs!)

I’ve been interested in doing audio drama for quite a while, so around April of last year I joined the mailing list for Darker Projects, having enjoyed several of their productions. I’ve since also joined the Broken Sea Audio and Pendant Audio mailing lists.

I’ve auditioned for a couple of things, but I’ve only been cast in one: the lead role (and a secondary role which I probably shouldn’t have) for the series Blood Moon. There’s been quite a delay in getting the first episodes out, but it should be coming soon. I’ve heard a trailer, and it doesn’t sound too bad..

I tried out for the main character and a secondary Quebecois character. I got cast as both, but I have my doubts that there is enough differentiation (or authenticity) in the French voice. They accepted both, although they had me re-record the French one enough times that I think I finally gave only a moderately crappy performance… 🙂

Recently, I’ve gotten cast as the Jinn in the Broken Sea Audio production Maudelayne. A bit roll, but it should be a fun production. The first episode is already out — I’m not in that one.

And just today I received the first two scripts of a new series called Kelmah. I’ve been cast as the “mysterious, disembodied voice” of Agapito, a secondary but recurring and very interesting character. Looking forward to that.

I’ve done a few other things here and there. I hosted a couple of behind-the-scenes interviews with people from Buffy Between The Lines, as well as acted as the announcer on a couple of the promos they’ve done recently. I’ll be working with Chuck Tomasi and Kreg Steppe from Technorama on a TOP SEEKRET project — I’ll post more when they launch. It’ll be a fun little project, none too serious.

I started writing some scripts last year, but abandoned the project at the time. I’m feeling that itch again, but I’m going to try it again. And, of course, I’ll keep auditioning.
