CAFFEEN! playlist for 2012-06-16: “KUATO”
The post-rock band KUATO out of Halifax, NS literally came as a surprise to me. I’m embarrassed to say, I don’t keep up much with the music scene — I’ve never been a details person, and I have a very esoteric, wandering method of finding new music that relies as much on serendipity as it does on any method at all.
KUATO came to CHSR to do a session prior to a performance later that night. I didn’t know anything about them, and I wasn’t directly involved in the session. But I loved the music. They have released 3 eps by now, all of them freely available, and its uncertain to me if they are continuing. All of the members of KUATO are involved in other bands, and those bands are also taking off. I wish them all well, and I’ll fan my private hope that more albums will come out of these guys in the future.
Along with tracks from all three of KUATO’s EPs, I’ve added similar bands, or things that just seemed to make sense. Local post-rock art makers The Instruments was a natural fit, as was the mysterious feint album which has no information (although I presume it was a local demo). The Precious Fathers song Swells is a great mix in here, but the most odd choice for me was the desire — nay, the visceral need — to include a song or two from West-coast classic spooky surf-rock band, Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet. I haven’t heard anything new from the for a while, and just recently I noted that they did a reunion performance in Toronto. Here’s to hoping there’s more from them!
- Pet Seminary by KUATO from the album Winter EP.
- Swells by Precious Fathers from the album Alluvial Fan.
- heart of the broken machine by feint from the album feint.
- Al-jazebra by Kuato from the album Free EP.
- Musical Interlude by Shadowy Men On A Shadowy Planet from the album Savvy Show Stoppers.
- Frances The Mutant by KUATO from the album Summer EP.
- Data Processing by The Instruments from the album NOMINAL.
- Having An Average Weekend (Theme from Kids In The Hall) by Shadowy Men On A Shadowy Planet from the album Savvy Show Stoppers.

Podcasting fascinates me, as a new genre, a new medium, a new social media and a new way of communicating.
Occasionally, these fascinations turn into a podcast or blog post at one of my other blogs, Understanding Podcasting.
